We all have quirks. Our little habits or routines. Those personal behaviors or peculiar actions we don’t even think about. You know, knuckle cracking, naming your plants or vehicles, eating only one food at a time from your dinner plate.
Green M&MS?
Recognize anyone? Not you, of course.
I had a teacher who absolutely hated mechanical pencils. She could spot one a mile away. This was particularly bad for me since I did, and still do, prefer using mechanical pencils. She kept a drawerful of used, chewed up, stubby, wooden #2 pencils and would foist one on me and confiscate my blue plastic PaperMate until class was over.
Me, I read anything. I mean cereal boxes, fine print, directions, labels….. I read an interesting toilet paper wrapper not too long ago. Fact: if you are not satisfied with or just need to comment on your TP, you may report to a street address, via email, or at a website. Please have the roll from the package. Of course I checked. There is an identifying number printed inside the roll. Reading maketh the man, or woman. I learned.
Do you always put your left shoe on first? Sort your French fries according to size? Say “Rabbit, rabbit” when you wake up on the first of the month? Do crossword puzzles in ink? Only eat sandwiches cut on the diagonal?
I know many of us writers have this little quirk: we mentally correct bad spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Written or spoken. Everywhere. We must. I’m so ticked when I spot this stuff in published works, I actually mark it.
Send me some of your personal quirks and I’ll do a compilation in one of my regular blog posts.
What makes your quirk unique? What’s the most unique quirk you’ve ever witnessed? Do quirks drive you crazy? Which quirk do you love best? Whose is it? Yours or another’s? Do you recognize your own? Would you change your quirks? How do you use quirks for your characters when writing? Show me QUIRKY!
Is it quirky to do the A to Z Blog Challenge? 😏 I’ll speak for myself!
I have always liked quirky people.

Fun post! I’ll admit I sometimes blatantly steal quirks from real people and slip them into my characters. They’ll never know… (well, maybe now they will.)
As for my own quirks the only one I can think of right now has to do with eating Starbursts. I always eat the yellow and orange ones first and the pink and red ones last, because pinks and reds are the best and you save the best for last!

Connie, of course you observe people’s quirks and use them in your writing! For writers, that’s called research! I like the Starburst quirk…..kind of like eating french fries according to size. Thanks for sharing…..quirk on!

Ok here goes: When Don would leave for work in the early morning, I would blink the outside lights 3x, meaning I love you. Going out to the kitchen naked to make the coffee and his lunch (is that TMI?) and him telling me I should have clothes on almost everytime because “someone” might see me through the window (seriously, at 6 am, and no houses close enough to worry about that, not that anyone would want to see anyway!). Always taking a “doggy bag”, and even eating friends left-overs the next day when on vacation (in other words they gave me their container because they weren’t going to eat it….) I guess I do not like food to go to waste. In fact, if they had leftovers from their own dinner they weren’t going to eat, they would offer it to me! There are a couple of songs I HAVE to sing along with on with the radio, like Piano Man, Bye Bye Miss American Pie, Landslide, Life is a Highway, Forever Young, Put on Your Blue Suede Shoes, and the Sign Says, Steven Tyler’s I don’t want to miss a thing….ok well maybe more than a couple. And someone I know has a quirk- he always orders a Manhatten and draft beer at the same time when we go out!

These are great quirks! I always take my leftovers from a restaurant, too…..hate wasting food. And I love singing along! Thanks for the ideas……I’ll get back to regular blogging after the Challenge and I hope to add to the Quirks list! 😋

Come to think of it, I did put my left shoe on first this morning. I wonder if I always do. I have no idea what my quirks are. Something to ask the Husband. I’m sure he’ll have a bunch to tell me.
